DDE

« Back to Glossary Index

DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) is a chemical compound that is a metabolite of DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). DDE is formed when DDT breaks down in the environment, and it is also a persistent organic pollutant (POP). DDE has been shown to have similar toxic effects as DDT, including effects on wildlife and the environment. Like DDT, DDE is banned in many countries including the United States and has been classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
